The Christian Right's devotion to Trump: It's a puzzlement

If we think of the sins that are numbered at seven,

The ones to avoid if your endgame is heaven,

It’s clear by their measurement Trump’s not  angelical.

Then why the support from those called Evangelical?

  • 1. He lets Jefferson Beauregard Sessions run wild, except with regard to a special prosecutor.
    2. Thou shalt not grab your neighbor's pussy is not in one of the 10 commandments, although coveting that or his ass is.
    3. When the discussion started whether Joel Osteen's church was slow to offer shelter to Harvey victims, it quickly turned to how much he was raking in. Similarly it was pointed out that the First Baptist Church of Hammond differed from others in that when the deacons found that Pastor Jack Schaap was engaged in messing with an underage girl, they called the sheriff. The NWI Times just reported that the church is being sued for an investment scheme that a deacon and Schaap ran. So, I don't think too many evangelical leaders are worrying about meeting St. Peter.

  • I think that for many of these Evangelicals their Christianity is used as a fraternity sign for their social conservatism. What they really worship is a simple society untroubled by science, reason or people different from themselves. Trump may be a flawed Christian in their minds, but he is a true believer in their true religion.

However, with reports that Mnuchin and his team are actually coming up with a tax plan, Trump's only true belief is in the almighty dollar. Again, I don't know what guys like Boy thought they were buying.

  • In reply to jnorto:

Amending my prior remarks, there is Steve Chapman's column today that white racists are getting exactly what they want, which may answer my Boy question.

  • In reply to jack:

Yes, a common theme among Trump and his supporters--including Evangelicals--is , as I suggested, opposition to "people different from themselves."

  • I did not see that final rhyme coming, great job. Plus, truth!

  • In reply to Kathy Mathews:

I agree with Kathy. Well done.
