  • Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints!! Isn't that the church Scrooge Mitt Romney gives much charity? Once again Aquinas you have risen above, you are my Bob Cratchet.

  • In reply to 4zen:

A Merry Christmas to you, 4zen. And God bless us and everyone.

  • In reply to 4zen:

There was a story in BusinessWeek about 18 months ago about how the Church uses the money, including buying radio stations (Bonneville Radio), resorts claimed to be tax exempt, vast farmland, shopping centers, etc. So, they may be closer to prerevelation Scrooge than you think.

Also, the question is whether the members consider the tithe voluntary.

I also heard a story about Thomas Morris sitting on top of Mt. Morris, N.Y., commenting on all the cults growing up around him, but wasn't able to document it.

  • In reply to jack:

Jack I think you point to an important distinction that I often like to make. Philosopher Paul Tillich describes it as a difference between essence and existence, we all see what plays out in human existence and it's often not pretty, but that doesn't negate the value of it's essence, it's origin. 'Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.'

Wishing you and Aquinas a very merry Christmas.

  • Time for some fact checking.
    1. Tithing is not forced in the church. Hello, the idea that you can force anyone to do anything is ridiculous - unless of course you are the government.
    2. It is true that the church has some non-ecclesiastical investments such as Bonneville Communications, but these are not tax exempt as they are commercial endeavors. Other investments, such as farm and ranch land, are used to support the enormous effort the church puts into humanitarian aid. Naysayers usually fail to point out the millions of dollars of aid the church provides to the poor and disaster victims.
    3. At the risk of getting political, yes, Mitt gives approximately 14% of his earnings to the church. I'd hardly call this Scrooge-like. The man knows how to run an organization. For the record, Biden's tax records indicate that he gives 0.5% to charity. Who is Scrooge-like?
