Eleanor Roosevelt: The Paragon of First Ladies

Born today was Eleanor Roosevelt

To parents with glamour and gelt.

A complement to FDR.

Some say the best First Lady by far.

Pearls of wit and wisdom from ER:

1. “Do one thing every day that scares you.”

2. “To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.”

3. “It is no fair to ask of others what you are not willing to do yourself.”

4. “You have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with the best you have to give.”

5. “Once I had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue: ‘No good in a bed, but fine up against a wall’.

  • I still wonder why back then they didn't question that FDR married his cousin. Apparently they were "sufficiently removed."

  • In reply to jack:

FDR was Teddy Roosevelt's 5th cousin. Eleanor was the daughter of Teddy's brother Elliot. Thus the 'once removed'. Legally that's sufficiently removed to get married.
