The Neverending Story of Pi

pi1

Today is the 14th day of the 3rd month of the year: Pi Day. Pi is the circumference of a circle divided by its diameter. It is an irrational number, which means it cannot be expressed as the quotient of two integers. Its decimal part does not repeat itself or ever end. It is approximately 3.14159265358 and on and on and on and on.

Most people might  know it
As three and one-seventh.
I once knew its places
Up to the eleventh.

It never stops going
Right into infinity.
It has all the mystery
Of God in the Trinity.

  • 'Pi', a 1998 black and white art film with Sean Gullette, about a socially inept mathematician who believed that the secrets of nature could be understood thru numbers.

This was an wild movie for me in the late nineties, I was reading Jungian psychology, chaos theory and I Ching.

Coincidently, we watched 'life of Pi' last night. I love the ending concept, which I've mused about since the book. What's the better story, which do you prefer?...and so it is with God.

  • In reply to 4zen:

That's quite a trifecta. Did the movie "Pi" get 3.14 stars?

  • Uh..yes.

  • Thanks for your poem on Pi. Yes, mysterious and irrational!
    Vertiginous.....

Have you read EDGE, by Koji Suzuki ---what happens when Pi starts developing a repeating pattern.....

Coincidence that CERN scientists confirm particle as Higgs boson on Thursday (3-14) , and a new Pope elected the day before??

  • What do the Pope and the Higgs boson have in common? Mass.

  • I can't stop laughing---that's so funny!
