House Passes Walsh Amendment

From the office of Rep. Joe Walsh (R, Illinois 8th District)…

Would cut funding to cities that refuse to enforce immigration laws

Washington- Late yesterday the House of Representatives voted to include Congressman Joe Walsh’s (IL-8) amendment in the Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Bill. The Walsh amendment prohibits the Department of Justice from awarding funds to “sanctuary cities”- cities that offer protection or assistance to illegal immigrants. The federal government has continued to give these cities resources to be the first line of defense in combating illegal immigration even though they refuse to enforce federal immigration laws.

Walsh stated: “If cities and states refuse to enforce the immigration laws that are on the books they will no longer receive taxpayer funds to do so. There are far too many sanctuary cities in this country, and there is absolutely no reason the government should continue to fund them. I cannot and will not ask the taxpayers from Illinois’ 8th district to fund this type of program. The misuse of taxpayer funds has gone on for far too long and must be stopped.

“I am pleased that this legislation passed the House today. This brings us one step closer to real immigration reform.”

The Walsh amendment was adopted by voice vote to HR 5326, which passed the House of Representatives on May 10, 2012.
