Illinois Can’t Afford Pay Raises for Officials When Families Are Broke
CHAMPAIGN, IL (February 28, 2012) — Republican State Senate Candidate for the 52nd District John Bambenek commented today on Governor Quinn’s budget proposal. The Governor’s proposal includes hundreds of thousands of dollars in pay raises for legislators and state officials, attributed to cost of living increases (COLAS) for state officials passed by the General Assembly, which previously had not been funded. This results in a spending increase for the state budget for fiscal year 2013, above both fiscal years 2011 and 2012, despite proposed spending cuts.
“When the state is in crisis, it is not time to give the politicians who drove us to the edge of the abyss a big raise while hardworking families are suffering,” Bambenek commented. “Politicians don’t deserve raises when hardworking families are suffering under the economic and fiscal nightmare they created.”
Mr. Bambenek looks forward to working with members and leadership in the General Assembly to pass a budget that is balanced, reduces state spending, and puts Illinois back to work.
