Officials and Candidates to Hold Property Tax Appeals Forum In Response to Soaring Property Taxes

From the campaign to elect Jonathan Greenburg to the State House (57th District)…

Northbrook, IL – Homeowners in Northfield Township and across Illinois have been squeezed by our troubled economy and by the terrible financial mess we’ve been driven into by Springfield politicians. Now, a group of local leaders wants to help our neighbors do something about skyrocketing property taxes.

State Representative candidate Jonathan Greenberg of Northbrook and State Senate candidate Dr. Arie Friedman of Highland Park are co-hosting a Property Tax Appeals Forum featuring presentations by Commissioner Dan Patlak of the Cook County Board of (Tax) Review and Northfield Township Assessor Patricia Damisch.

“The overwhelming majority of residents I’ve talked to have seen their property taxes go up even though the value of their homes – their biggest investment – has gone down,” Greenberg said. “With stagnant wages and increased benefit costs leading to less take-home pay, thousands of lost jobs, and a 67% income tax increase, I thought we needed to help taxpayers catch a break.”

The forum “Appealing your Property Taxes” will be held at the Bernard Weigner JCC (300 Revere Drive Northbrook) on Wednesday January 11th, 2012 from 7:00-8:30 PM. The educational forum will focus on filing successful appeals and the process of receiving property tax exemptions.

Cook County Board of Review Commissioner, Dan Patlak, will lead the forum. Patlak oversees the appeals process for North and Northwest Cook County and will give residents an inside look on the property tax appeals process. “At the Board of Review, we have vigorously trained our staff on what constitutes a successful appeal,” said Patlak. “By holding Assessment Appeals Forums, we are able to educate and empower homeowners. Most property owners I talk to don’t mind paying property taxes as long as they’re paying no more than their fair share and that’s what we aim to accomplish for them at the Board of Review”

Patricia Damisch- Northfield Township Assessor wants the citizens of Northbrook to know that her door is always open: “I am a resource, free of charge, and am always willing to help Northfield Township residents with their appeals process”.
