Hultgren Addresses Universities Research Association, Stresses Importance

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (IL-14) today released the following statement after addressing the Universities Research Association (URA). In his remarks, Hultgren discussed the importance of Fermilab and the research done there, as well as the need for Congress to transition to a long-term budgeting process.

“I believe it’s time for the federal government to reaffirm its commitment to basic scientific research, by reforming the budgeting process to ensure greater stability and predictability,” said Hultgren, a member of the Science, Space & Technology Committee. “The eighty-six universities that comprise the Universities Research Association plan for the future and Congress should help them by doing the same. In the 21st Century, with 21st Century challenges, 21st Century technology, and 21st Century resources, there is no reason why we should still be restrained by an 18th Century budget process.”

With the University of Chicago, the members of the URA co-manage Fermilab and comprise the Fermi Research Alliance, LLC. As the Congressman representing Fermilab, Hultgren also applauded the institution’s accomplishments and future prospects.

“While the Tevatron’s work is now at an end, it is still yielding scientific advancements and providing the material for dozens of Ph.D. theses and academic papers every year. I have worked hard to ensure that Fermilab will continue to generate ground-breaking research through the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory, and through participation in the exciting work being done at CERN. In all of this, a reformed budget process will assist the lab in planning for the future.”
