Rep. Peter Roskam: Want a Fresh Start?

From the office of Congressman Peter Roskam (R,IL)…

The American people gave House Republicans some very clear priorities last November, like focus on creating jobs, stop spending money we don’t have, and work to end the Democrats’ job-destroying health care law.

That is the message I heard from my district, and that is exactly what I am working on in Washington. When the Democrats failed to pass a budget in the last Congress, House Republicans took the challenge of funding the government as an opportunity to begin our cost-cutting work. We voted to pass a long-term continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year – cutting $100 billion from the President’s budget request.

While it didn’t pass the Senate, our bill actually got more votes than the Democrats’ own bill did – in a Democrat-led Senate!

Undeterred from our mandate to cut spending, House Republicans passed two more short term CR’s with pro-rated spending cuts from our original bill – $2 billion per week. That means that in five short weeks, Republicans forced Washington to cut a historic $10 billion in spending while preventing a government shutdown.

Democrats are in disarray. News reports today show Democrats are divided, frustrated, and angry at President Obama’s lack of leadership. It’s time they act to get the government funded with meaningful spending cuts. Read more from Politico.

And despite what you may have read or heard, Republicans are continuing our work to stop the job-destroying Obamacare. In fact, we have already taken several steps to do just that. So far this year we have:

  • Voted for a full repeal of Obamacare.
  • Passed funding restrictions to severely limit the President’s ability to implement Obamacare.
  • Continued to work on legislation to choke off harmful programs paid for through “mandatory” funding in Obamacare.

And we won’t stop there in our efforts to fix our economy and stop Washington’s spending problem. But we can’t do it alone. We need your help to spread our message. Click “Share” below to share this email with your friends and family on Facebook, or forward this email to three of your friends.

  • I think you are a master of manipulating the truth. The budget did not pass because of republicans. The majority of constituents want universal health care. Goes to show republicans only their pocketbooks! I don't want my tax dollars going to any of you people's health care or retirement!
