Kinzinger to Offer Amendment to Block Taxpayer Funding for DOJ Lawsuit against Arizona Immigration Law

From the office of Congressman Adam Kinzinger (11th District)…

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-11) will offer an amendment on the House floor that would eliminate taxpayer funding for the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) lawsuit filed against Arizona last July over its immigration enforcement law (SB 1070).

Washington’s failure to secure borders, has led states like Arizona to take matters up themselves. Kinzinger says it is unfair to ask hardworking citizens to fund the DOJ’s agenda.
“Rather than wasting time and taxpayer dollars suing states, the DOJ must turn its focus toward enforcing current immigration laws,” said Kinzinger. “The federal government should be working to make Arizonians feel secure rather than using money from their own paychecks to fund an attack against them in federal court.”

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has helped lead the effort in Arizona to enforce immigration laws that will protect the citizens of Arizona and all Americans.

“Our own federal government has become an adversary at a time when we need help,” said Sheriff Babeu. “We need a government who will provide armed services to protect our borders from potential terrorist attacks, not lawyers looking to fight us. Congressman Kinzinger’s legislation eliminates taxpayer funding for the DOJ’s lawsuit and echoes all Americans who demand a secure border and believe that our federal government should be helping Arizona at this critical time.”

“Americans are looking for solutions that will bring us toward comprehensive immigration reform now–not government lawsuits and wasteful spending that will belabor the process and leave our nation vulnerable to even more illegal immigration activity,” continued Kinzinger. “The federal government’s first priority should be securing the border. Only then will we be closer to having a comprehensive immigration policy.”
