Tire Training, Achieving the Perfect Fighting Stance

This drill is a cool variation on shadow boxing. I use a tire sometimes to work on balance and maintaining my center of gravity. This tire is the perfect size for me. It is also a great way to work on circular movement. It can help you learn how to move right and left. If you adjust right or left incorrectly you will fall off the tire. And, if you over-adjust your weight onto your front leg when throwing the jab ( a very common error), you will fall off the tire. Personally I gain a lot of benefit out of this footwork drill. I think it is applicable for boxing, kickboxing and MMA. Another drill that is cool on the tire is ‘compressions.’ It is like running in place – but the energy is focused down into the tire. While keeping your knees bent, press your heels down into the tire. Maintain your balance. You should feel this in your calves and hamstrings.
