Need a Last Minute Costume: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle

When I was a senior in high school I was assigned to helping out a 3rd grade class with the Halloween parade.  At that point, I had been doing martial arts for almost 7 years and was a fan of every martial arts film. Although The Karate Kid was inspirational, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turltes was truly awesome.  The TMNT films re-charged a lot of schools and made my skill set with the sais extra cool.  So in the fall of 1988, my father helped me construct a home made costume of Rafael, the turtle that used the sais.  I wore my black karate gi, a red belt, green plastic mask and a shell that was made out of a baby green pool.  We painted it so the existing texture resembled the shell of a turtle and attached a few leather straps that I wore in a criss cross fashion.  The best part was wearing my real sais that I used in competition.  Although I would not suggest metal weapons for kids today, since there are plenty of plastic ones, you may want to check out these links to make your own TMNT costumes below.
