8-yr-old girl asks Hasbro, How Could You Leave Out Rey?! #WheresRey

UPDATE!!!! HASBRO has heard us all! In the past 24 hours, Annie Rose’s letter to Hasbro has been retweeted nearly 2,000 times and has been written about in articles and news outlets around the world. Annnnd, HASBRO just contacted me with the wonderful news that they will be adding Rey to Star Wars Monopoly.  Social media works! Thank you to all who shared Annie Rose’s letter. She is asleep in bed, but I can’t wait to tell her the happy update tomorrow morning.

Last night, I sent a tweet to Hasbro with the following letter from my 8-yr-old daughter, Annie Rose:

Annie Rose was very disappointed when she learned that the newest version of Star Wars Monopoly included game tokens for Luke Skywalker and Finn and Kylo Ren and Darth Vader, but NOT Rey!!!!

As the letter started to go viral on Twitter, Hasbro sent Annie Rose a response:

We are very appreciative of Hasbro’s response. We are happy that they are paying attention to what their customers are saying. Now that the movie is out and spoilers aren’t really an issue, here’s our follow-up suggestion:

The time has come to recognize the importance of female leading characters.  In the future, we would love to see retailers embrace female characters as fully as they embrace male characters.  After all, why wasn’t it considered a spoiler to include any of the other new *male* characters in SW Monopoly?

Our family has a long and beloved history with Star Wars. Our three young daughters are true fans. LucasFilm even gifted us the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the London set during filming of TFA.

We ask these questions about why Rey is missing from Star Wars Monopoly, because we recognize that Star Wars has created a kickass heroine who embodies everything that we admire and aspire to be, and we want to celebrate her with our children as we play and imagine and create new stories.

May the Force Be With You!
