Sometimes a beer grabs your tongue by the taste buds and beats it into (flavorful) submission.

Mr. Marmalade Imperial (Double) IPA (8.8% ABV, 88 IBU), from Around the Bend Beer. Co. (ATB), is just that type of beer. Mr. Marmalade incorporates bitter oranges grown in Seville Spain, which serve as the foundation for the classic British orange marmalade, as well as orange blossom honey and a bit o’ sweet orange peel. The orange and honey provide acidity, tartness, fruit-bitterness, and sweetness, which plays with with the abundant Columbus and Amarillo hops that appeases any hophead. The multi-noted taste experience provided by Mr. Marmalade is flavor packed, yet refreshing. It’s good alone, and it pairs well with just about any protein.

Say all you want to about the array of fruit-forward beers emerging on the market, or the fact that IPAs continue to fill the shelves of every craft-beer centric liquor store, it still comes down to one basic fact – a beer is either good or it’s not. Mr. Marmalade is good. Indeed, It’s exceptionally good. So good, in fact, that ATB originally brewed this as a special release in the winter of 2015-16, but by popular demand, ATB had to bring it back. So, to celebrate the return of Mr. Marmalade, Around the Bend is going around town and hosting a few events.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Around the Bend is producing an incredibly good beer. If you haven’t sampled anything from ATB yet, you really should — and fast. They started in 2014 and continue to impress. From the exceptionally tasty Puffing Billy American brown ale with cocoa nibs, to Ghost of ‘Lectricity kolsch, to the summer 2016 release of Rosarito Daydream, a lime agave saison, it’s quite clear ATB can tackle any style and do with both skill and finesse.

They brew on Diversey alongside brewing friends Ale Syndicate and Arcade, right down the road from Maplewood Brewery and Distillery, and not that far from Revolution, to name a few of the places in that area that’s quickly becoming a mecca for great beer.  All different, yet all seem to want to make Chicago taste buds happy…mission accomplished.

Mr. Marmalade is a fine example of Chicago brewing savoir faire and, more importantly, proof that any ATB is a beer you should feel happy to purchase with your hard-earned dollars; ATB is worth every penny.
