STICKNEY/CICERO, IL — Two-year-old Illinois-registered fillies took centre stage at Hawthorne in today’s Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante, in which Irish Marvel sharpened the focus on her as an Illinois-bred filly to watch.  A game winner of a maiden sprint on October 26, in which she outslugged Ghaaleb Royale after a protracted duel, Irish Marvel stretched out flawlessly to two turns in the Whitworth, winning it as easily as she pleased.

Though Irish Marvel set the early pace in her sprint debut, she instead rated kindly this time around, as Get None rushed to the early lead.  Booda Lou tracked behind her on the rail, with Irish Marvel biding her time two-wide.  Ronan stumbled out of the gate but recovered to chase in fourth, in front of only first-time starter Brilliant One.  They continued that way through the opening turn and down the backstretch, though Ronan took gradually closer order behind the top three.

Into the far turn, Irish Marvel drew gradually closer to Get None, and went on to engage to her outside near the three-eighths mark.  Get None stayed with her until the quarter pole, but into the lane her stamina gave out and Irish Marvel took full control, drawing off to win by nine lengths.  Behind her, it was a fight between Ronan outside and Booda Lou inside for the place, a battle Ronan won by a head.  It was another 11 3/4 lengths back to the fading Get None; Brillant One, never involved, completed the order of finish.  Be Authentic was a trainer scratch.

Irish Marvel is a Illinois-foaled two-year-old bay filly by Daaher out of the Explicit mare Marvelex.  She was bred by Dr. Kathleen Halleran, and is owned by Kathy Halleran and James P. DiVito.  DiVito also trains Irish Marvel.  Good showings in the Pat Whitworth run in the family: the only other foal out of Marvelex to race so far, Razamajazil (Jazil), ran second in the 2014 edition of the race.

Irish Marvel’s victory in the Pat Whitworth makes her undefeated in her two-race career.  In her October 26 debut at Hawthorne, she won a six-furlong maiden special weight for Illinois-registered horses.  The $35,790 winner’s share of the purse brings Irish Marvel’s career earnings to $47,790.

Jockey Edgar Perez got just the trip he planned to with Irish Marvel, sitting just behind Get None.  “The trainer told me, the three-eighths pole, the quarter pole, just go, and she responded good.  She’s a nice filly.”

Irish Marvel paid $7.20 to win.  The $1 exacta over Ronan (5-6) returned $31.70.  A trifecta with Booda Lou third (5-6-3) came back with $13.46 for a $0.20 base bet.  The $0.20 superfecta with Get None in the lowest rung (5-6-3-4) paid $27.26.
