Here we are in 2017. The Cubs won the World Series, we have a new president, and you are making that traditional resolution list. Did you know that getting organized and losing weight are two of the most common resolutions that people make? Could this be your year?
So where should you begin on your quest to get organized in 2017? I say start with the paper. With one year ending, and the new beginning, paper is a good place to purge. For those of you that haven’t gone paperless, your files could use a clean up. If you don’t have a filing system, then set one up.
Here is a simple step by step process to help you organize your paper.
- If you haven’t already, set up a filing system for the paper you need to contain.
- Clearly label each file. I use a label maker. Its easier to find your material when you can see the label.
- Evaluate where you can go paperless? Start with your investment papers, and bank accounts. This will eliminate quite a bit of paper that comes in your home.
- What can you archive? Your filing system should be only papers in current use. Your old taxes, medical, mortgage and old legal can be stored in an archive box or bin. You need to keep them but they don’t need to be in your prime space.
Where do you put papers that are in current use? Set up some “action items files” These are action items that you need to process. Use verbage that works for you. I have action item files that include “To Do”, “Pending”, and “Social”. Every piece of paper that comes in your home needs to place to go- not a pile!!!
