Saving Stuff For The Next (Bigger) Home; A Good Or Bad Idea

I work with a lot of people that are in their first homes. Almost all of them have stuff that they are saving for a future home. Whether it’s a weekend retreat or a bigger home one day. They have stuff. Boxes and bins fill up their storage areas or extra space.

Is it a good idea to live with boxes of stuff that you don’t use? I am on the fence on this one.

Here are some things to think about:

* Are these stored items affecting your living space? Are they tucked away nicely or causing clutter in your home?

* Did you go overboard when you got married and register for everything? Now you feel guilty with all those gifts.

* Was it inherited? Do you have your grandma’s china and crystal? Do you like it? Are you going to use it? Don’t let family guilt take over your home or space.

* What are your goals? Is that dream home coming in 5 years, 10 years? Your taste will probably change by then.

* Take a look at your lifestyle? Do you still have those girly items that you had when you were single? Or those bachelor items-cheap pictures of sporting events? Old kitchen items in boxes?

* Are you keeping former decor items? Be realistic about your taste. Do these things fit your current and future life?

There is a lot to think about when choosing to save items for the future. Be realistic about your choices. If you aren’t gonna use it, loose it.

For what you are keeping, make sure that its properly packaged and labeled. Its important to know what you have in storage.
