According to my clients, the hardest thing about getting organized are the piles of mishmash. You know, those boxes or bins that contain misc items and are put together for no reason at all.
Some people have a “go to” area in which they put items they don’t know what to do with or don’t have time to process. Before you know it, you have build up! Yup, piles of stuff. Boxes of misc. items. Drawers stuffed with stuff.
So what should you do? Get out the mishmash and categorize your items. Yes, dump it out on the floor or table and start sorting. You will be amazed at how many of these items already have homes and have just been misplaced. That goes along with my statement of “Don’t put it down, put it away”.
If you live in a small space, get off your buns and relocate your items as soon as you finish each box. If you live in a larger space, use containers to categorize items. When you finish the project, everything should have a home. There are no half-way houses in the land of organizing!
How to avoid these creepy little piles coming back into your life? Define your space. Define your containers. DO NOT HAVE CATCH ALL CONTAINERS!! BAD! BAD!
If the item comes in your home and needs to be relocated to another part of the house, put it enroute to that space. Items that go upstairs, should be placed by the stairs. If you are constantly running up and down floors with stuff, consider using a basket or a reusable bag. Before you go to bed each night, do a quick walk through of your space and put things away.
