According to studies, about 3 to 5 million people are actual hoarders. Ever since the TV show came out…everyone thinks they are a hoarder. So if you think you might fit into this category check out the hoarding scale from the Institute of Challenging Disorganization.
There is quite the difference between hoarding behavior and being a true hoarder. Many professionals use the following as the official defination of hoarding:
1. The aquisition of , and failure to discard, a large number of possessions that appear to be of useless or limited value
2. Living spaces sufficiently cluttered so as to preclude activities for which those spaces where designed
3. Significant distress or impairment in functioning caused by the hoarding
So if you have a few piles, or a hard time purging, you probably aren’t a hoarder. We all have things that we hold onto after we don’t need or use them.
