Jamiah Calvin focuses on figurative drawing and painting. He also dabbles with oil on copper. I discovered his gift last year during the unrest over the shocking murder of George Floyd. The aspect of Jamiah’s art that fascinates me the most is the detailed facial expressions of his subjects. I believe all of his portraits have a story to tell.
Jamiah’s level of creativity is in plain sight on his Instagram account, where he goes by Miah the Creator. Aside from the serious portraits, he has a playful side who paints fictional character murals. Galleries such as Elephant Room Gallery and Vertical Gallery have displayed Jamiah’s work.
I recently discovered one of his striking murals, “Divine Wishes,” created for the Brown Wall Project. I like the contrast of bold colors paired with the simplicity of a child blowing a dandelion. This beauty is at 1745 West 18th Street in Pilsen.
Jamiah is working on pieces for his upcoming solo shows scheduled for 2022. One of my goals for the new year is to attend at least one of his shows. I can’t wait to see what he brings to 2022!
