Get Crafty at Bulldog Ale House

I discovered this newish venue by sheer accident due to the Lollapalooza takeover and so delighted I did. For starters, Bulldog Ale House (State Street location) has a killer patio, allowing you to hone your people watching skills. The wind was out of control during my visit, but not enough to make me move inside; however, the staff went out of their way to rearrange customers and put away the umbrellas for everyone’s safety.

My attentive server, Kristen P., was outstanding and shared information above and beyond what a server typically tells you. For instance, she made sure I understood that my second beer was going to be in a smaller glass because of what I was ordering. I was elated when she told me all drafts on the menu were a paltry $4, which is their Thursday special.

Bulldog offers a whopping 40 drafts with a style for every beer lover. I decided to begin with their House Lager, which was refreshing and tasty on a balmy summer day. Next, I had to go with a favorite, Dragon’s Milk by New Holland Brewing. This flavorsome stout goes down way too smooth for having an 11% ABV, so it’s a good thing it was served smaller and in the most adorable glass. I couldn’t resist my usual beer pairing and ordered a side of fries. I give these seasoned, crispy potatoes two thumbs way up.

This is a great addition to the burgeoning South Loop craft beer scene and I will find myself returning soon to take advantage of the patio weather before it’s gone. Bulldog Ale House is within walking distance to many popular attractions including Grant Park, the Museum Campus, Jazz Showcase, and Buddy Guy’s Legends.
