So I’m trying something a little new here (new to me, not even remotely new to the internet). My version of Oprah’s Favorite Things, which is actually nothing like Oprah’s Favorite Things… “Things That Rocked My Week.” Hope you enjoy!
1. America + Ebola=
This genius post from Lists That Actually Matter that was one of the most highly viewed on ChicagoNow last week (I’m really jealous I didn’t think of this.
A new Ebola Czar that looks like Flounder from Animal House.
[Serious comment: I’m scared of this thing too, but can we stop making it all about us and refocus on helping countries really impacted by it? And don’t even get me started on travel bans…]
The main celebration day of the Indian festival of light (and Hindu New Year) was yesterday, but like most Indian holidays, the party continues for several days and it’s a great reason to head up to Devon Ave. in Chicago or your local favorite Indian restaurant and honor a theme we can all get behind- light and good triumphing over darkness and evil. The tandoori chicken, aloo gobi (potatoes and cauliflower), and naan at Saffron Spice were just what I needed after a long day of work. Traditionally you clean your house too, but let’s not get crazy…
3. Marlins Man
I first spotted him during the ALCS, when I mistook him for an Orioles fan in an orange sweatshirt behind home plate in Kansas City. “Wait a minute, is that guy wearing a Marlins shirt?”
Oh yes he was. And what a pleasant surprise to see him back during the World Series! And now I can follow him on Twitter too (@Marlins_Man). Rock on, Miami lawyer Lawrence Leavy. I know I’d be doing the same thing if I had that kind of sports travel budget. Mine barely gets me to US Cellular Field once a year.
Nope, I don’t have a costume. Not even thinking of one this year, although I have been following all the great posts on Listing Towards Halloween for some holiday ideas I’ll never execute but wish I could. But I did get a cool Halloween shirt from Illinois based 3E Love that I’m excited about. And I’m hoping to actually get some trick-or-treaters this year, even if I have to sit on the sidewalk in front of my gated building and throw candy at neighborhood children. I’ll also be painting a pumpkin teal and getting some rad stickers for the Teal Pumpkin Project, because kids shouldn’t feel left out just because they can’t eat the processed (yummy) grossness that is Halloween candy.
5. 24 hours in Vegas
It’s been too long since I’ve gotten out of dodge. So I’ll be stuffing a backpack, jumping on Spirit Airlines, and heading to Vegas for basically a day. Dinner reservations at Julian Serrano are made and the craps table is calling my name. And I have a folder full of articles to read for school on the plane (sad trombone).
