Bundle up Chicago, Groundhog Woodstock Willie sees his shadow

It’s Groundhog Day! Spoiler alert, the groundhog saw his shadow so we’re in for six more weeks of winter.

“Well kids, I said, it looks like we need to bundle up for a long winter.” Lilia replied, “No Mommy. That doesn’t really mean it’s going to happen, that’s just what people say.” I’m not sure who to believe, my optimistic daughter or Woodstock Willie.

Wait, what? Isn’t his name Punxsutawny Phil? Well, that would be the Pennsylvania groundhog that you’ve probably seen on the news.

However, did you know that the cult favorite movie Groundhog Day was actually filmed in Woodstock, Illinois? That’s right, woodchuck, chuckers, Bill Murray was reliving the same day over and over again in Woodstock, a town about 50 miles Northwest of Chicago.

In honor of the movie, Woodstock now holds their own yearly celebration, “Groundhog Days.” This week long event includes tons of activities including the Groundhog Day Dance, groundhog trivia, a chili cook-off and a walking tour of filming sites.

It all culminates with the prognostication which took place today at 7:07 a.m. Woodstock Willie was awakened by the sounds of a local Polka Band and the singing crowd.

It just so happens that we woke up at a crazy hour this morning and took a little road trip to see the famous furry weatherman. Check out the photo gallery below to see Woodstock Willie in all his glory!

Happy Groundhog Day!
