Pilgrimage to Lake Michigan in Photographs: Day 23

Pilgrimage to Lake Michigan in Photographs: Day 23
Another nighttime pilgrimage to Lake Michigan today, after class. A couple of my students brought in photographs of the lake. One told us how he’d gone too far. “What are you doing out there?!” Someone yelled to him. “Homework!”, he replied. “Well, You’re not supposed to be there. Come back, but walk slowly.” For me,... Pilgrimage to Lake Michigan in Photographs: Day 22
It’s brilliantly sunny and freezing cold at Lake Michigan, and I forgot my snow pants again. I make my way through the drifts down to the shore and gaze out. It’s white and cold and still. I study the snow blanketing the ice. There is a texture in the crust near my feet and I... Read more »

Pilgrimage to Lake Michigan in Photographs: Day 21
Today, on my trek to Lake Michigan, things were sublime. Snow falling, a gathering storm… The path to the lakefront wasn’t plowed. Snow drifted knee-high. It’s warm again on Thursday. Melting warm. The jagged edges of the ice floes are coated with dirt. Understandable I guess, being right on the edge of a large city, but it seems incongruous on Lake Michigan – this amazing natural phenomenon. I was standing there admiring the patterns in the ice when I noticed footprints... Read more »

Pilgrimage to Lake Michigan in Photographs: Day 16

Pilgrimage to Lake Michigan in Photographs: Day 16
Wednesday, Lake Michigan was blue again – a balmy 27° day. I came at evening rather than lunch and I walked to the furthermost point I’ve been yet on this pilgrimage. Actually it’s the furthermost point south that I’ve walked along the Chicago lakefront ever. There were other people there with me. Tuesday I saw... Read more »

Pilgrimage to Lake Michigan in Photographs: Day 15
Okay, if any day was a day not to go on a pilgrimage to Lake Michigan today was it. Man was it cold! I bundled up but this was numbing. I took a little extra time to walk out south along the shore. Out for a stroll in the chill. And it sunk in. For... Read more »
