It’s blogapalooza! What does that mean, you ask? Once a month, ChicagoNow bloggers have one hour to create a post and all must publish at the same time. The topic this month is to write about a song that has special meaning to me and why…here I go!
Everyone who knows me knows that I am a HUGE Chicago Cub fan. I have been a fan for over 48 years–yes that is a long time. Let’s face it, there have been very few great seasons (9 including this year) for my home team. Did these bad seasons stop me from hoping that the next year will be the one…no because I bleed Cubby blue.
In 1984 the song “Go Cubs Go” was written by Steve Goodman who happened to be a life long Cubs fan. Sadly, 6 months after writing this song he had passed away at age 36 from leukemia. This song continues to be played after a Cubs win and sung loudly and proudly by all Cubs fans.
Why is this song so meaningful to me? The answer is simple–with each win this song brings me hope that maybe this is will be the year where the Cubs will get into the pennant and maybe even the World Series. Yes there have been a lot of disappointing seasons, but even during these disappointments just hearing that song always makes me feel happy and hopeful and puts a smile on my face. This year I have had a smile on my face all the time with 103 regular season wins plus a division series and a championship series. If the Cubs win the World Series my smile may just become permanent—Go Cubs Go!
