Equality is for All

It’s blogapalooza. What does that mean, you ask? Once a month, ChicagoNow bloggers have one hour to create a post starting at 9 pm and all must publish at the same time at 10 pm. The topic this month was to write about a movie or a character that has affected me. Well, here I go…

I have always loved going to the movies. The smell of popcorn, the big screen, the story. So many movies I have seen in my lifetime– some good, some bad, and some I had no idea what the heck they were talking about. The best movies, to me, are the ones that make me want to be a better person such as advocating for equality whether it be race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, mental disability, etc.

There are so many movies that have deeply affected me.  The Help, Milk, Schindler’s List, Rain Man just to name a few.  I have sat here thinking about one character or one movie that has changed me but this is an impossible task. Every movie in this genre affects me. I leave the theater and I wonder how there are people who feel that only their way of life is the right way without any consideration of other’s needs, feelings, rights. I try everyday to help those that need it, to stand up for those that cannot stand up for themselves, to remind those that feel their religion, race, sexual orientation, intelligence, or any other trait that they may possess is not the only accepted one. I hope I have not offended anyone. The truth is, I am not afraid of standing up for what I believe in. What I am afraid of, however, is sitting back, doing nothing, and regretting not doing the right thing.
