Word is the apple doesn’t fall from the tree and from the looks of it Diggy Simmons-17 year old son of Rev Run of Run DMC-stays true to form. Discussing his new album and related topics-I would have guessed Diggy was much older speaking to his maturity-he spoke with confidence, vision and surety of someone who has been around much longer than he has.
Speaking at length from Hamer Lounge at the Hard Rock Chicago-here’s a bit of what he had to say:
So what brings you to Chicago this time around?
This time around I am just going around the country at this moment celebrating my debut album “Unexpected Arrival”. So I have an in-store at FYE on Randolph Street. And they wanted to throw me a birthday/album release party so I’ll be at Rich City Skate tonite.
Let’s talk about the new album…how did you get the title “Unexpected Arrival”?
It came from two things-on a personal level and a ode to something that people needed to hear. The personal was because of where I came from-people would be shocked because of my last name that I rapped and the way I perform: people would not be expecting it. Tw0, a lot of the times people in life-won’t go through with things-because they don’t know their capability-so they’ll push back.
“Unexpected Arrival” is about making your arrival special in life no matter what people think or what people say. It’s about feeling that confidence within yourself-and that belief within yourself-before you try and make the world believe it.
How many tracks are on the album?
There are twelve tracks on the album as a whole-eleven songs plus the intro.
What is your creative process behind creating an album?
I’m happy to have worked with some people who made it so organic to be the album that I wanted it to be. Let’s say I’m working on one track-it’s about listening to the production first and that giving me a feel. A track will make me feel a certain way and it will either be words coming to me or rap flows coming to me or melodies coming to me-then I’ll reference those in the recording booth or I’ll just start writing down words and execute from there.
On the album, artists I’ve collaborated with include Jeremiah, Tank and Jadakiss.
With Jeremiah being from Chicago, what’s your vibe on music coming out of the Windy City?
My favorite artist of all time comes out of Chicago-Kanye West. Lupe Fiasco is another favorite of mine-and of course Jeremiah. You guys got really, really talented people coming out of Chicago. I love being here. I love the vibe. I love driving around and looking at the scenery.
Diggy Simmons has definitely arrived…now we can just sit back and enjoy the ride!
