I am passionate about issues related to literacy and education. Reading beyond the surface can be the difference between an informed society member and an ignorant one. I am in my 14th year of teaching high school English and journalism. I am constantly in awe with how students can be both connected via mobile devices and completely disconnected in terms of real-life communication skills and resourcefulness. Literacy education in and out of the classroom is of great import not only to teachers but also parents, community members, business owners, managers, and, well, society as a whole: it takes a village to continue fostering an informed populace, one that questions content and seeks answers. Being able to really read closely and thoughtfully does not begin in a classroom nor does it end in a classroom.
