Fun facts about the first 24 hours of MTV

Thirty-five years ago today MTV signed on for the first time and some, including myself, would argue August 1, 1981 marked the true start of the 1980s. I mean, could you imagine the 80s without videos and the VJs that played them?

It’s pretty much common knowledge that “Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles was the first video shown and most of us know Pat Benatar’s cover of “You Better Run” was on second. But there are a number of other interesting facts about MTV’s first 24 hours that you may not know. After all, many of us had to call our cable companies demanding, “I want my MTV!”

Since I was only 6 years old on August 1, 1981 and don’t remember that much, the source unless otherwise specified is Wikipedia, “First Music Videos Aired on MTV”.
