America Just Got Trolled By the First Lady

If you’ve spent even a moment on social media today, you must be aware of #jacketgate.  This morning it was announced that First Lady Melania Trump would be making a surprise visit to a child detention center in Texas to see, firsthand, the conditions in which Central American children who have crossed the border into... 15 Women Over 40 Who Slayed At Last Night's Emmys

I am not always a fan of what Tina Fey chooses to wear on the red carpet, but last night, she owned it. The cut, color, and drape of her Oscar de la Renta gown was uber flattering on the 46 year old comic powerhouse. And the dangling earring, cocktail ring combination was all the accessorizing she needed. I was also LOVING her wavy full hair. This is the kind of award look that comes across as effortless, though of course we ladies know better. Just loving the overall effect. She had it goin' on last night in all the right ways. Well done.
A few years ago I very studiously and with great joy recorded my thoughts and opinions about award show fashion for the Oscars and the Emmys and catalogued it under “Middle Aged Mom Fashion Commentary.”  Most of you loved it, some of you hated it, finding my fashion criticism snide, mean, and too judgmental.  Truth... 2015 Golden Globe Fashion Commentary from a Middle Aged Mom

I had to Google who this gorgeous creature was and it turns out it is Dakota Johnson, daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith and the gal starring in that 50 Shades of Gray nonsense. Putting that impressive street cred aside, she looks simply stunning in her Chanel gown. The cut and style are flawless, her sandals add lightness. The hair and makeup look effortless and easy. This is a modern young woman going places and I am curious to see where. Just perfect in every way.
It’s that time of year again, when the ladies get fancy and the dresses get fancy and the middle aged moms of America start looking at their TVs with raised eyebrows — AWARD SEASON IS HERE! Last night’s Golden Globes was fairly uneventful, as far as award shows go. Nothing too exciting, a few gasps... Read more »

2014 Emmy Fashion Commentary from a Middle Aged Mom

Kerry Washington tirumphantly returns to her rightful title as a red carpet knock out in this Prada dress. Having been really unimpressed with her previous season's dress picks -- kind of ultra safe and conservative to accompany her baby bump -- with baby out, Washington is free to return to her edgy, crisp, modern hits. This orange and black somehow works without feeling Halloweenish and the hair and makeup add to the modern tone. Well done! Looks like Ms. Washington found a fixer for her own bad self.
Hey-O!  It’s that time of year again!  Award season has officially begun with last night’s Emmy presentation.  Sigh.  With back to school and baby’s first birthday and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, well, I was caught off guard, which is the THIRD AWARD SHOW IN A ROW I MISSED. Nothing screams overtired middle aged mom to... Read more »

Happy Birthday, Audrey

Style icon, humanitarian, Google doodle cover girl.  Today marks Audrey Hepburn’s would be 85th birthday. If you peruse my Pinterest boards, it wouldn’t take long to see that I have a love for all things mid-century.  Audrey Hepburn is a large part of that. She had tremendous style.  She had powerful grace.  She had a... Read more »

2014 Oscar Fashion Commentary from a Middle Aged Mom

Naomi Watts rarely disappoints -- she is one of those stars that almost always get impeccable points for technical skill on the red carpet. Rarely for artistry, as she rarely takes risks, but almost always for looking clean, modern, smart. This Calvin Klein dress is no exception. It's hard to see in this image, but the best piece is the geometric collar necklace. Great strong cuts against the more delicate white beaded dress -- a nice complement. The other thing she is missing is that gorgeous husband of hers, Liev Schreiber. Yum. Can never go wrong with a little Liev.
I’m back!  I had so much fun doing my middle aged mom commentary for the Golden Globes, I’m back for the Oscars, which is basically the Golden Globes for a select few 63 year old white men, something they like to call “The Academy.”  Pffft.  Even old white men like to see pretty ladies all... 2014 Golden Globe Fashion Commentary from a Middle Aged Mom

Okay, I love Jennifer Lawrence. She is a national treasure. Her haircut is perfection, her curves luscious, her whole being is simply refreshing. But we need to talk about this dress. Great from the waist up, but a fail from the waist down. One of my Facebook pals said it best, "She looks like a snowman." It's just not flattering, despite the styling being perfect. I KNOW. Stone me now. Sorry, JLaw. But I still love you.
So last night was one of the most anticipated nights in Hollywood.  Golden Globes night, baby — Oscars with alcohol.  Pfffft.  This middle aged mom was so busy with a newborn and executing my son’s fifth birthday party (rainbow themed, yo!) that I didn’t even realize it until I sat down at 8:15 and read about them...
