I’ve started hearing about new anniversaries coming this year.
One radio station I listen to is advertising its anniversary of doing something — not a round number like 100, but significant in a way that one fewer year, as in 2018, would not have been.
It reminds me of the first time in 2018 that I saw a mention of the centennial of the end of World War I coming in November 2018. I wondered whether that was going to be marked properly in this country, whether our short historical memory could really register what had happened in the world “so long ago.”
But in November, when I participated in a centennial/memorial concert by reading “In Flanders Fields,” the anniversary became one of the more powerful times of 2018. It didn’t feel “long ago” at all.
So don’t discount whatever anniversaries are coming, whether in the world’s history or your own. Especially if they’re a significant number — whatever that means to you — observe them, ponder them, and let the anniversary become part of the memories of the new year.
