My Graduation Day at ATI Physical Therapy

My Graduation Day at ATI Physical Therapy

After three months of dragging my once painful and stiff body three days per week at ATI Physical Therapy, graduation day is finally here!

ATI Physical Therapy Wicker Park has the best staff, as they combine fun and professionalism to ensure that you have the best care possible.

Earlier this year, I suffered from a terrible lupus flare which deteriorated my muscle function. Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks itself, causing damage or potential damage to internal and external organ systems.

My therapy consisted of occupational (learning techniques to gain upper body strength) and physical (learning techniques to gain lower body strength).

It was so tough when I started because I was on a high dose of Prednisone (a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation) that caused major water weight gain. The water weight was mainly in my legs and feet which made it even worse to walk.

I was using a walker in addition to a seat pad to elevate me because I didn’t have the strength to stand without it. It was very depressing for me because I’m so independent and I had to rely on others to do things for me.

The staff at ATI Physical Therapy is very patient and understanding but don’t let that fool you–you gotta do the work, and they will make sure you do! There were many occasions where I didn’t want to go to my sessions but for the reason above, that was my motivation.

I also love the setting at ATI Physical Therapy. It has the look of a mini-gym but more personal. No matter how many patients are on schedule, it was never too crowded to where I couldn’t get my work done. The staff always compliment you and constantly check on you to see if you were doing okay on a task. You are never left alone.

I’m going to miss the camaraderie there but I hope I don’t have to go back for obvious reasons. I was given exercises to do at home and now it’s up to me to make sure that my time and healing through ATI Physical Therapy wasn’t in vain.
