In yesterday’s season opener against the Illinois Fighting Illini, Senior Forward, Walt Gibler proved his leadership and physicality throughout his entire 26 minutes of play. Gibler is only half of the Loyola two-headed monster, comprised of the aforementioned Gibler and Junior Forward, Ben Averkamp.
The 6-7, 230 pound Forward from Cincinnati, Ohio got off to an excellent start by adding in a quick bucket early in the first half, but got into foul trouble forcing him to grab bench minutes. In the second half, his play resonated with his fellow Ramblers, but the Illini were just too big to handle. Gibler went on a single handed six point run, pulling Loyola within four. Scoring a game high 19 points and shooting 7 for 11 from the field, Gibler also tabbed 6 boards as well as going 5-5 from the free throw line. Knocking in the easy ones from the charity stripe, is a must for the Ramblers when playing high caliber opponents, like Illinois. Gibler’s astounding play must continue in the games to come in order for the Ramblers to improve in the Horizon League.
Walt Gibler is off to a hot start and once Ben Averkamp and co. show a bit more vigor, Loyola looks to be in good shape. Their road trip continues this Monday as their battle a perennial powerhouse, the Kansas State Wildcats.
