Bill Buckner could make a return to Cubs

Many Cubs fans wanted to see the return of a former fan favorite to the dugout.

They may get one, it just won’t be Ryne Sandberg.

I mentioned the other day that regardless of the Cubs managerial situation, they will be looking to make a change in the coaching staff.

Before any of the Dale Sveum hot-seat talk began, I was informed there were internal discussions within the Cubs organization about replacing hitting coach James Rowson. Sources say Rowson is a goner regardless of the manager.

There is a big push from some to promote current Boise hitting coach and former Cubs star Bill Buckner. However, some feel Buckner is too valuable of a teacher at the lower levels.

I’m sure the manager situation will get handled first, but it’s worth keeping our eyes on.

  • Rowson and Deer have got to go. And while they're at it, get rid of Bell as well.

    But keep Bosio.

  • I agree. Keep Bosio.

Tom, I miss your insights on Cubs Den, so I guess I will have to come to both places for all things Cubs.

Girardi and Buckner in the dugout? Could be a great Christmas after all!!!

  • we will find out Monday if Dale hits the ivy bricks or not, I find it interesting that they are meeting with him a day after the season ends. I would think that somebody is losing thier job . I hope Girardi comes home personally . Side note on Buckner He wont take any other MINOR league job since He has a ranch in Idaho but maybe a big League job He would take? Miss Your input as well in the Den but glad I found Your new spot .

I agree, that it's happening Monday makes me think Dale is out. I do wonder if the new manager will be announced right away or if there will be a search. (Which can likely be read: "We're going to wait for Joe to make a decision.")

  • I wonder if Theo misses messing with Cashman , If both teams want Joe could be some fun to watch lol.

  • Bill Buckner is one of my favorite Cubs. He was an awesome hitter. He was a gusty player. I hope he is the Cubs next hitting coach.

I suppose it depends on your definition of awesome. He did have some pretty good years with the Cubs, but over a 22 year career he ended up an OPS+ of 100 which makes him league average. He didn't strike out much, but he didn't walk much either. I'm curious whether his students have good walk rates.
