An interview with a Director: I have a passion to help others grow

For a class that I am taking, I had to shadow an Early Childhood Education Director for six hours and then ask her a list of questions about her role. Even though I have worked in this field since 2001, it was interesting to read about another person’s journey and passion. I hope you take a moment to read about my director, Jennifer Carrier.

Why did you choose to pursue a career as a Preschool Director? Since I babysat a lot, I began working at a daycare in high school. I then became a preschool teacher at a Bright Horizons, and after a few years, I became an Assistant Director. Now I have been a Director for 8-9 years. I actually didn’t want to become a Director at first, but I loved the mission of Bright Horizons, and had a passion to help others grow.

What skills do you think are most critical to this job? Time management is key, and being able to come back to what you were doing after being pulled away by a call or concern. Being organized is also important and customer service along with patience and understanding.

What personal characteristics do you think add to your overall effectiveness? My high energy and positive attitude as well as my ability to multitask help me to be effective in this role. I am also very tactful in my communication style when talking to people face to face.

What do you enjoy most about being a preschool director? The people are what I enjoy the most, those parent partnerships and relationships with teachers and children. I just love being able to make someone happy.
