July’s Blogapalooz challenge is to write about my favorite place in the world? Although my first thought was “anywhere that I am with my family,” I do have many favorite places that I enjoy going to with them and without. Although I do love being outside walking or hiking in nature, there is one place that I feel the most relaxed and at home. I am like the character Moana in the song “How Far I’ll Go” by Auli’i Cravalho because the water calls me.
I’ve been staring at the edge of the water
‘Long as I can remember, never really knowing why…
I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know…where I long to be
See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me…
I grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania where we traveled to the Erie Peninsula weekly, and then when I moved to Chicago, it wasn’t long before I discovered Glencoe Beach. As a teenager, I made monthly drives to go to the beach, but also just to stare at the water. I even lived in Glencoe for five years, and was able to jog there, just to look at the waves. I don’t even need to go in the water to feel that sense of contentedness come over me. I just look, listen and feel as the water rolls in. Now if I am at a beach where I can see the sun setting over the water, then that is just the icing on the cake. The joy just overwhelms me. I have searched for and watched sunsets all over the world, and have even painted one I saw in Hawaii and another one from Florida. I am not sure why the water and the waves call me, but just sitting by a lake or an ocean is one of my favorite places to be.
