This weekend as I went for walks with my mom, her dog Molly and my daughter’s puppy Lula, I couldn’t help but notice the flowers all around me. As cities are being destroyed by hurricanes, I was even more grateful than I usually am for the beauty all around me. The flowers were still blooming; the air was a fabulous temperature; the trees are beginning to change colors for fall, and the sky was a beautiful shade of blue.
Ralph Waldo Emerson was quoted as saying that the earth laughs in flowers. With all that is happening right now, I feel terrible laughing and even feeling happy. The moments of joy I feel are replaced with guilt, a haunting feeling that I am lucky to be free of the pain and devastation happening in our world. I can pray for them, and I can donate money or supplies, but is that enough? What more can I do? I know that even if my life isn’t perfect, I am thankful that my loved ones and I are safe.
All through my day, no matter where I go, or what I do, I am always looking for the good. I try to find the good in people, in the world, in my life or even just in my day.
