Is it good to be a teacher of young children?
Just today, we conducted a Professional Development Day for our region in Bright Horizons. There were approximately 130 teachers and leaders in attendance as we learned new information and brainstormed with each other. In the afternoon, we also implemented a Brightening Lives Activity to benefit our local Bright Spaces for the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children.
Pam, one of our teacher’s who was highlighted in the BH 30 years anniversary video, recently told me, “When in doubt about my teaching, I look at the children and how they inspire me to explore new avenues of teaching. I hear the wonderful words from these children and parents that show so much appreciation; that is when the doubt goes away and the teaching begins.”
Bright Horizons has the saying, “Every child, every classroom, every day” and I would agree with it. I was an infant teacher for almost 13 years. When people hear that, most are shocked and surprised. They ask why would I want to take care of infants all day long, but I loved it. For ten of those years, Jenny and I cared for and taught seven or eight infants each day together. Most days were wonderful, but we did have our share of the so-called rough days.
Even during those days when some of the babies were sick or just wouldn’t take a nap, I still loved being a teacher. I knew that I was helping them grow and learn. I really believed that I was making a difference in their young lives. I taught them math, science, language, social and many other skills, but I also taught them that they were loved all day long.
I used to say, “The babies might not remember me when they grow up, but they will know they were loved.” That is why I chose to teach very young children. I educate the children of tomorrow because I know that I can make a difference in their lives. That is why it is good to be a teacher of very young children.
