Although the sweet aroma of the coffee does make me smile, the joy of my morning drink is really in choosing which coffee mug to use each day. Making myself coffee is usually the second thing that I do after waking up. The first thing I do is to thank God for my health, my children and for another day in this world.
My daughters are all almost done with college and grown, but choosing between my smiley face mug, my mom mug or one of the many other mugs they have purchased for me over the years makes me think of them.
I hold ones from where they attended college, as well as, others I simply received as gifts. Just a few days ago, I was talking to a woman that is due to have a baby any moment now. She is anxious and excited to hold her newborn baby, but my advice to her was to just enjoy this time of waiting.
I don’t regret much in life because all of my experiences made me who I am today, but I do often wish that I had savored the process of living more. I looked toward their first step, going off to kindergarten, learning to read and to write. The list of everything I was looking forward to kept my focus off each day.
Choosing a mug to drink my morning coffee in makes me slow my day and my thoughts down. I savor my coffee so that I can remember the past; so that I have another chance to be in those moments again.
Whether my focus is serious or light hearted like today, I will always be looking for the good, in people, in the world, in my life or just in my day and my cup of coffee.
