Forgotten Chicagoans: Mathias Hibbeler

At the top of the building at 917 W. Armitage Avenue in Lincoln Park reads MATH. HIBBELER 1895.

Mathias J. Hibbeler was born in Germany in 1866. He arrived in the United States in 1884. He married Emelie (“Emma”) Huber in 1889 and became a naturalized citizen in 1890. He had a son, Mathias Jr., with her in September 1896 or 1897. In 1899, he was nominated for City Clerk.

This building was erected in 1895 to reside and house his jewelry business. The address at that time was 166 Center Street. Unlike the Coles Brothers just down the street, Mathias remained there for the rest of his life. In the 1920s, the business became Mathias Hibbeler & Son.

On May 18, 1925, Mathias died. Mathias Jr. remained a jeweler here through at least the 1940s.
