On the side of the vacant building at 6568 N. Sheridan Road in Rogers Park is a sign that reads “M.E. MAHER Co.” Partially obscured, the words “Estate” and “Sheridan Rd.” are also visible.
Maurice Edward Maher was born on April 24, 1869 in Illinois to Irish parents. He married Julia Casey in 1892 and had two children with her.
The same year he got married, he had a grocery store (Wolfe & Maher) in Superior, Wisconsin. A few years later, he moved to Streator, Illinois, where he worked in lumber. He started in real estate there in 1901.
He soon moved to Chicago within a year took the real estate business with him. He hit the ground running by becoming a member of Illinois’ 43rd General Assembly. He remained in real estate for a few decades but appeared finished with it by 1930, when the family had moved back near Streator where he became a farmer. By 1940, he had returned to Chicago as a “rodsman” for the Cook County highway system.
He eventually moved back again to the suburbs to live out the rest of his life. He died at the ripe old age of 95 on November 20, 1964. He is buried in Streator.
