Writer Jessica Gardner is a native of Chicago's Northwest Suburbs and resident of the North Shore with deep Southern roots (Batesville, Mississippi, anyone?). She's written Little Merry Sunshine since July 1, 2007 and joined ChicagoNow in November 2013.
The name Little Merry Sunshine is based on a childhood nickname. The story goes that as a child, Jessica was always so happy that she even slept with a smile on her face, so her mom nicknamed her Little Merry Sunshine. It stuck, along with her commitment to focus on the good in the world and to leave it a little better than she found it. She does this by sharing her passions and dreams, what inspires her, and maybe you too, and furthering the discussion about how we can listen to our better angels.
Within months of its original launch, Little Merry Sunshine gained a sizable audience. In March 2009, LMS was named one of Chicago's Best Blogs by the Chicago Tribune, which led to a prominent feature on the front page of online edition of the Tribune on April 17, 2009 (4 years and 7 months to the date prior to LMS joining ChicagoNow). The realization of a dream come true and one step closer to being published.
Jessica has two cats (litter mates), Sammy and Zoey who meow at @SammyandZoey. Occasionally, she writes about their antics.
LMS works in higher ed, owns her own business, volunteers, cooks, reads, debates politics, swims, and seeks out new adventures. She is also a Deputy Voter Registrar and an ordained Universal Life Church minister, so if you're in need of registering to vote or want to get married, Jessica is your at your service. Jessica lives for the Summer, nights at Ravinia, and weeks in Northern Michigan. There are also rumors that she regularly drops lines from episodes of The West Wing into everyday conversation. She's also a huge fan of Country Music, Opera, and all her Apple toys (MacBook, iPhone, iPad, iPod, and AppleTV). A Cubs fan from birth, Jessica fervently believes they'll win the World Series in her lifetime. Not unrelated, she also believes in Santa Claus and coerced her friends into visiting him with her in 2013 at Marshall Field's (yes, she knows it's Macy's now, but do not ever call it that in front of her) where she gave him an earful for failing to deliver the Easy Bake Oven he promised when she was 5. (UPDATE: Santa finally delivered the Easy Bake Oven on December 19, 2014. Thank you Santa!).
