Dropping That Class At EIU Was A Big Mistake

Dropping That Class At EIU Was A Big Mistake

“Write about a time you made a mistake or were wrong about something.”

In the spring semester of 1986, I signed up for an elementary school music class at EIU.  This class met every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:00.  A to the M.

Big effin mistake.

I went the first Monday – I had new spirals, a brand spanking new pack of bic pens and freshly sharpened pencils.

I went to school pre-internet.  That syllabus wasn’t going to be found online; someone’s ass needed to haul across campus to pick up the freshly mimeographed copy.

I can still smell the fresh purple ink.

I must have hit the snooze button ten times that Wednesday – woke up at a quarter to 8 – brushed my teeth and ran my fingers through my hair – and sprinted from 2nd Street to the Fine Arts Center off of 9th – top speed.

Friday morning came.  And went.  I wasn’t kidding anyone…Thursday night was “Ladies Night” at Ted’s.  There was no way in hell I would ever make it to an 8:00 on a Friday.

What was I thinking.

Thursday night was a ritual.  Cheers.  Knot’s Landing.  Ted’s Warehouse for quarter beers.  And, I usually had a sawbuck.

Who was I kidding?

I was not about to give up Thursday nights to learn how to teach ankle biters how to blow into a flute-a-phone.

The following Monday, I headed to the Registrar’s Office and dropped the class.  I’d take it another semester.

It was a stupid Ele Ed music class.

Fast forward to Fall.  1988.

I was registering for classes for the following Spring.  All I needed was an Ele Ed P.E. class, the music class, and a semester of student teaching.

Winter break 1988 was a wake up call at home.  Trouble was brewing in the form of a pending divorce.  I decided to take a semester off and save the world.

I reasoned that I could take some time and return later to take the stupid music and PE class requirements.

Bigger effin mistake.

Fast forward to 1991.

The 3-hour Ele Ed music class was no longer a requirement according to the EIU Ele Ed Catalog.  Sadly, 30 more hours were.

I left the counselor’s office.  Defeated.

Big mistake.

Big effin’ mistake.

My life’s biggest regret.
