Take a Break: Rest Your Leadership Muscle

Know when to hold ’em and know when to fold ’em.

Leadership is exhausting…and though the job is never done…a good leader knows when it’s time to take a break. There are so many examples that prove that breaking is necessary for optimal performance. Think about working out…we take a break between leg days. We do this to give our muscles the opportunity to recover for our next work out.

Have you ever been in an afternoon meeting and you start thinking about random stuff like what’s for dinner or if you turned off the stove? It may happen all the time so you never think of it. The reality is…you are tired!

Back to the workout/fitness analogy…you schedule your leg days and your back days. You design the exercises you plan to do…how many sets of 15. You rest between sets. You figure out when is the best time to add cardio to the workout. The point is, a lot of thought goes into physical fitness and building physical muscle. How are you working your leadership muscle?

When do you get distracted?

Schedule your lunch an hour before that… and give your brain a rest. Transcendental Meditation has become very popular across the country. Some places are doing a city-wide meditation time.  Google even introduced a meditation course at Google University.

What do you spend the most time doing?

Is it talking, emailing, meeting… Give your brain some time to process what it has taken in from those activities. Studies show that learning and memory happen when you are asleep as well as while you are in waking rest. Set a “break reminder” on your phone! Allow processing time.

Recharge with a hobby

Writing this blog has been a great leadership rest for me. Find creative outlets to recharge your role as a leader. Write, Teach, Learn to play an instrument…develop your right brain.

Respect yourself

Taking care of your physical and mental health is how you show others how much you respect yourself. It shows that you are absolutely committed to excellence in every way. Taking a break to go to the gym, or take a walk, or get a massage is not selfish…it’s mandatory in order to operate at superior levels.
