Every Ornament Tells a Story

Steve calls my cabal of friends the Lesbian Coven of Witches. One year I made these for my friends. Not artistic, but heartfelt.
Christmas is a journey for me.  The Joliat family was big, and some years were lean.  Still, there was never a year when Mom didn’t have a few tricks up her sleeve to make magic.  One year she sewed a wardrobe of clothes for our Tiny Tears dolls and presented them in a trunk.  Another... Coming, Going, Waiting

Coming, Going, Waiting
Summer ebbs, a reality that generally sends me to a vat of candy corn.  And caramel apples.  And chocolate…. But this autumn, we are ticking away the days until we greet our second grandchild.  What a counterpoint to any seasonal regrets.  October 6.  October 6.  Opal.  Like my Mom.  Libra.  Like my Mom. I have... Read more »

Waiting for a Baby Dahl

We are counting the days. In October, we will welcome our second grandchild. Mike and Kathryn have their baby's room ready. Girl/boy? Who knows? (the ultrasound tech only)We shall see!
The Dahl family is growing!  Mike and Kathryn are having a baby in early October, and in their honor, the sisters and sisters-in-law had a shower.  OKAY- the poor girls were rolled over by my notion of a themed “Mother to Bee” theme.  They were powerless to extinguish my Pinterest fueled ideas. Because everyone is... Read more »

A Look Back

A Look Back
Last July, the family huddled at Northwestern, awaiting the arrival of Henry Dahl.  Matt and Justine were a little late, and they arrived windblown after riding the motorcycle to the exburbs to interview a wedding photographer for their big day.  They were sure they had selected kindred spirits. Fast Forward a year…. In May, Matthew... Read more »

Hoarder Janet

Hoarder Janet
We all expand to fill our space. Since much of our space has been vacated by the boys and their junk, a vacuum has been created.  I am only too glad to stuff it with debris that I do not need.  Since I rarely plate a meal, my kitchen drawers have provided shelter to more... Read more »

Dog Days

Dog Days
The term Dog Days seems to imply that it is too hot for Dogs (or humans by extension) to frolic.  Nope.  Sirius, the dog formation of stars is close to Earth from the end of July to August.  Coincidentally, these days occur when the earth is warm, lakes are comfortable and the skies shine blue... A zig and a few zags..ADD Janet
Less than two weeks to go until my baby is a husband. I am chipping away at my “to do”list.  Jewelry made with Justine.  Check. Table tent cards embellished.  Check. Table number frames bedazzled. Check.  (Matt is photo filling them….) NOT DONE. Dress to alterations.  Check. Meeting at Church to formalize details. Check. Rehearsal dinner.... Read more »

My Superbowl Gift to all Hosts

My Superbowl Gift to all Hosts
The big game is coming up, and the Dahl home will not host any festivities.  I can live with this, no problem.  Matt is moving into a new home this weekend, and I expect he will be busy, and Pat and Rachel will be with Steve in Florida.  So I will not be heating up... Read more »

Smaller dreams, easier goals

This year, I am aiming lower in my “Steveaway” goals. The warm week we just enjoyed encouraged me to do a thorough cleaning of the dog run, a priority which became more essential when the dogs’ messes melted with the snow.  I want them to use this 10 x 10 area which I have established,...
