I was just up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin last week and had a nice visit with my friend Mark Gostisha, owner of the Forest Lake Country Store.   My bride Judy and I enjoy these visits because we learn so much about what’s goin on in the northern Vilas County area.   Mark shares his newsletter with us and I’m sure that you enjoy hearing about what’s happening up north so you can enjoy the things we do when we go up there for our summer vacations.

May 27th An Arty Party
10 AM – 2 PM at LOLA Center for the Arts
Did you ever just want to try watercolors or play with some clay or find out what the heck alcohol inks are? This is the time to get your hands dirty and try things out. LOLA’s Arty Party crew is ready
to help you with a variety of art materials and other surprises to get your creative side jump started!
This is a free event open to “kids” of all ages, 4 – 84!
Drop-in, try a little of this, try a little of that….

June 3 Calling all Coloring Enthusiasts!
Time to…Color a tote! Colored Tote by Carol Chapman
10:00 AM – Noon
Adults & Teens 16+ $25.00
No experience necessary.  Cost includes all materials and use of instructor’s tools.
Held @ LOLA Center for the Arts

Carol will assist you in choosing a design to iron on your tote and then by using a variety of materials, we will color our totes to match your personality! Floral designs will be abundant since summer is upon us and Carol
will share ways of coloring to make your designs “pop”. She will demonstrate shading, layering, outlining, over-coloring and with using the color-wheel, students will also learn color contrasts and compatibles.

June 6 Eco Dyed & Printed Scarf by Debbie Jircik 10 AM – 1 PM

Held @ LOLA Center for the Arts
No experience necessary. All materials supplied.
Dress for fun mess!  Join artist, Debbie Jircik and explore natural components for dyeing and printing. Each student will create a naturally dyed silk scarf and other items.
Eagle River, clay & paper artist, gardener, & food advocate – Debbie Jircik, will share her passions for working with natural & environmentally friendly materials with LOLA students.

Learn the ancient Japanese craft of Gyotaku, which is making prints by inking fish and pressing them onto paper. We’ll use models of freshwater fish to create beautiful art

populations are now in trouble.

June 8 — Let’s Talk Birds
Join Brian Bogaczyk, Ottawa National Forest Wildlife Biologist,
to learn about well-known birds like eagles and loons
to more obscure species like the least flycatcher and
everything in between. He will wow you with facts and photos
of birds of the Ottawa and Western Upper Peninsula.

June 15 — Adventures of a Wildland Firefighter
Join Ottawa National Forest Assistant Fire Management Officer Lisa Gowe
as she talks about wildland fire and the experiences of a wildland firefighter.
Take a closer look into life on the fire line and check out the equipment
used by firefighters.

June 22 — Impact of Deer Browsing on Shrubs and Wildflowers
Dr. Walter Carson, University of Pittsburgh Ecologist and
Charles Bullard Fellow in Forest Research at Harvard, will be here
to discuss deer browsing and the impact it has on some of our favorite wildflowers and shrubs such as elderberry and Canada yew.

June 29 — Orienteering
Develop skills and confidence to use a map and compass with Joe Panci,
Ottawa National Forest Conservation Education Coordinator.
Learn compass basics, how to read maps and understand their symbols,
and test your knowledge outside on a compass course.

Boulder Junction Guides offer seminars for local lakes

Sunday June 11, 7pm: Spring Bass Fishing by Marty Clauson Fishing Adventures at the Boulder Junction Community Center.   Marty will discuss spring Bass fishing details such as sight fishing for Bass on the beds, how to find them, and techniques for catching big bass in our waters.

Sunday June 18, 7pm: Smallmouth Bass Fishing with a Fly Rod” by Bill Sherer’s Northern Adventure Fly Fishing at the Boulder Junction Community Center. Bill will demonstrate fly fishing of our small streams and rivers in float boats. Bill also discuss fly rod choices and the flies for best results.

Sunday June 25, 7pm: Summer Musky Fishing by Erv Keller’s Guide Service and Errington’s Guide Service
at the Acorn Lodge 10370 Main Street Boulder Junction. Erv and Mike will discuss lures and techniques for early summer musky fishing along with pool demonstrations on correct lure retrieval.

and the area’s beautiful, scenic bike routes.
The Festival begins on Friday with a kick-off reception and a Sunset Night Ride.
On Saturday activities include a Family Fun Paved Trail Ride, Century Ride(100-mile), Half-Century Ride(50-mile) and Cranberry Ride(29-mile) with rest stops and activities along the way in Manitowish Waters, Presque Isle, Boulder Junction, Star Lake and St. Germain.  A post-ride gathering at Koller Park, on the shore of Rest Lake offers music, games, prize drawings, food and drink. The 2017 Manitowish Waters Boat & Car Show will be held Saturday, May 27 on the grounds of Little Bohemia.  No matter the weather, we know for certain that the many visitors who crowd the docks at Little Bohemia will always enjoy the antique & classic boats and cars.
