Local Pond Report by Ken HUSKER O’Malley
This Week – Hey Don, Our spring like temps (earlier this week) are not helping out the ice on area lakes. Some shorelines have 1 to 1 1/2 inches of ice. Main pad is locked up but ice does not look good to travel on. Areas that have current have some open water. I recommend staying of the ice until we get some colder temps. TTYL
Last Week – Hey Don, Ice thickness on area lakes vary depending on the lake. Most have 4-5 inches along the shorelines. Middle basin drops down to only 3 inches. Next few days will build those areas up. Bass were good mid day on tip ups using medium roaches in shallow weedy areas. Right were they should be at first ice. Things are shaping up for an excellent ice fishing season. TTYL

Lake of the Woods Minnesota Fishing Report by Joe Henry
This Week – Ice fishing is in full swing and remains excellent. The key depth’s are 20 – 25 ft and glow red or pink rattle spoons tipped with a minnow head or tail has been the best for the jigging line. Use a plain hook or an ice jig with a live minnow for the dead stick. As of right now we are sitting at 14-15″ of ice on Four Mile Bay and 12-15″ on the lake. Some resorts are allowing trucks without wheel houses. Others not quite yet. Day by day decision for each resort. Work through resorts as their ice roads are monitored. Know where you are going. As always, safety first.
The Rainy River has been good for walleyes. With the huge shiner run this year, a lot of shiners and walleyes are still in the river. There is good ice in areas but there will be problem areas. Like every year, work through resorts when ice fishing river as current and ice thickness will vary. The snowmobile trail is staked from Wheeler’s Point to Baudette on the river. Do not deviate from trail unless you are familiar with ice conditions.
Last Week – Fishing so far is excellent. The key depth’s are 20 – 25 ft and glow red or pink rattle spoons tipped with a minnow head or tail has been the best for the jigging line. Use a plain hook or an ice jig with a live minnow. As of right now we are sitting at 9.5-14 inches of ice. Work through resorts and their ice roads as they are tested, flooded and plowed. Know where you are going. As always, safety first.
The Rainy River has been good for walleyes. With the huge shiner run this year, a lot of fish still in the river. There is good ice in areas but there will be problem areas. Like every year, work through resorts when ice fishing river as current and ice thickness will vary. We don’t encourage travel on the river unless through a resort or outfitter.
Up at the Northwest Angle the walleyes are on fire. Reports of 9-14 inches of ice. Resorts are fishing in 20 feet of water with a good stream of 17 inch walleyes and healthy saugers biting. Work through resorts who are constantly routing trails on the best ice, around cracks, etc. Stay on resort trails, do not deviate. We are excited, but safety first!
