I just learned from Chris Young, the public information officer for the IL DNR that Coffeen Lake is closed to boating while there’s a cleanup of a turbine oil leak at the Coffeen Power Station.
According to Young, “Dynegy Inc. reported the spill of 800-1,000 gallons of turbine oil into the discharge ditch on Wednesday, Feb. 25. No direct impact on fish or wildlife has been observed. However, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has recommended the lake be closed until further notice to expedite cleanup activities.”
I hate hearing about things like this happening. Anyway, if you had any plans of getting out on Coffeen with your boat, hold off for awhile. When I receive any news or updates on this, I’ll keep you posted.
Coffeen Lake is located south of Springfield and northeast of St. Louis.
