Northwoods News for October

Northwoods News for October
Lisa Dziedzina with a 40+ muskie. (Released)

I’m looking at less than 7 days away from my next trip to the Northwoods of Wisconsin.  Doing some TV shows, catching some muskie, crappies and maybe a bass or two.  I’m heading north next Monday with my daughter Lisa.  Joining us this time will be Roger Wright, pro staffer for the Fishing and Outdoor Radio show and one who helps me a lot with the Illinois Outdoors TV Show.

I’m sure you all know that Lisa and I love the Land O Lakes area.  Roger has learned to have a passion for this area as well with a few trips up there earlier this year.

One thing that’s for sure will be a breakfast or two, maybe a lunch stop at the Forest Lake Country Store next week.  I hope to see you there so don’t be bashful.  I’d enjoy meeting you.   I won’t plug in my photo here but I will add one of my daughter Lisa with a muskie that she caught not that far from the FLCS.   This is what got her hooked on the Northwoods.

Can’t wait, see you up there next week.  For now here’s the……

October 2014 News from the Forest Lake Country Store

God worked overtime when he built the Land O’ Lakes area.  It is beautiful all year and outright gorgeous in the fall!  This fall is possibly the most spectacular fall in a long time.  The color started in mid September.  A splash of color here then a smudge over there, next an entire tree is ablaze in vibrant yellow, crimson or even hues of purple and light browns.  The next step is entire roads are lit up in fall glory.

Suddenly a couple trees loose a few leaves.  The first leaves that dribble on the ground look like a few drips from the artist’s brush.  Next more leaves are on the ground and there is outstanding aerial color combined with a small, brightly colored welcome mats on the forest floor.  Then there is the aroma.  There is nothing as earthy or pleasant as the smell of fall in the north woods.  A bike ride or walk in the woods is a heartwarming experience!

Some trees have lost all their leaves but there should be plenty of color left for a great Cranberry Fest weekend!

New in the Store

We are working feverishly with Sysco (food broker) to evaluate and change our menu.  The first major change will be an end to the Chicken and Rib dinner on Saturday nights.  The people that have tried the meal have truly enjoyed the offering.   However the meal has not proven to be as consistently successful as our Friday Fish Dinner.  We prepare meals every week but have sold from a low of 2 meals to selling out of all of our prepared food (this last week was a sellout)  It is difficult to host a special menu selection with these extremes.  Watch future newsletters for an introduction of something new on Saturday nights, until then we will rely our great Pizza and the rest of our menu for Saturday’s!!

Wine Specials

Au Contraire wines.  A legacy to a wine pro.

David Taub was the founder of Palm Bay importers, one of the longest running and largest importers of wines from around the world.  His knowledge was great and would usually defy common held “myths” in the wine business with the statement “Au Contraire”.  His skills helped the company build a reputation for quality wines from around the world based on his ability to defy common held beliefs and myths.  He found great wines at prices that defy their appeal!  David has passed on, but his legend continues with these two great offerings; a Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay, both with the iconic name Au Contraire.

Here are the tasting notes and pricing for both:

Au Contraire Chardonnay

Color: Gold with green tints
Aroma: Pronounced lemon citrus core with tree fruits of pear and crisp apple lined with a floral note of jasmine. Taste: Citrus and tree fruits are complemented by a hint of brioche and toast. A round, elegant mouth feel with perfect balance leads to a lingering finish with a touch of minerality.
Pairs well with shellfish, cream sauces, roasted chicken, fish, and zesty grilled vegetable dishes as well as mild Gouda and soft cheeses.

Au Contraire Pinot Noir

Color: Brilliant ruby
Aroma: Layers of cherry, raspberry and plum with a hint of violet are surrounded by subtle spice
Taste: An elegant and silky mouthfeel with fine-grained tannins and firm acidity showcase the wine’s ripe red fruit.
Pairs well with grilled and roasted meats such as lamb, pork, poultry, duck and light sauces, or with delicate cheeses.

After this early order opportunity the shelf price on these wines will be $20 on the Chardonnay and $32 on the Pinot Noir!  If you are interested, take advantage of this special introductory opportunity from our distributor!

We have sampled these wines in the store and found them to be exactly as presented.
