Northwoods News

Looking at the calendar while reading the September Forest Lake Country Store Newsletter, I note that my next visit to the Northwoods is just a bit more than a month away.  I thought that I was excited about the trip but my daughter Lisa is even more excited.

Last year she and I were up there and she caught her first muskie and first smallie.  This year she invited some friends to join us and they now are excited about getting their first muskie.   We’ll do it.

Fall approaches quickly and it’s a beautiful time of year to be in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, especailly the Land O Lakes area.  Here’s the latest Northwoods news…   and see the gallery with photos from my trip with Lisa last year.  Enjoy.

Forest Lake Country Store – Great food and a whole lot more,,,
September 2012 Newsletter

Two special early closures, Saturday Sept 8th and Saturday Sept 15th we close at 2 PM.  We look forward to a slower pace and some enjoyment of the fall colors.  Did we say color?  It is already starting to speckle the landscape in a not so subtle manner.  Most of the ferns are still green, but a few volunteers are giving up their color for a lighter shade of yellow or a tan hue.  It seems all of the ferns are slowly turning their edges inward and laying just a little closer to the forest floor.  Some of the maple trees have a splotch of scarlet on the sunny side of the leaves.  A trip down Highway B or US 2 will show you the symptoms of an early fall.  The scattered colorful signs are not in epidemic proportions, but an early indication that chilly nights, warm days and steaming morning lakes are not that far in the future.  If you want to enjoy the north woods color, plan a trip in mid September this year!

The Ride with Leinie was a huge success.  250 cyclists joined the fun for a ride followed by a beer tasting and brat fry with all proceeds benefitting  Wilderness Lakes Trails.  Watch for a larger, multi day event next year.  If you want to see the fall colors from two wheels, check out the WLT Colorama ride.  For more information check the website.

Fall fishing is starting to get better.  Reports of walleyes are coming with more frequency.  This week Bruce Becker added yet another 30” walleye to his lengthy list of trophy walleye.

Events in the Store
We are trying a very different beer tasting in the store.  For one week we will explore five different beers from New Belgium Brewing (Colorado).  Each day we will offer a free taste of one beer.  The tasting days are Monday Sept 10th, Wed Sept 12, Thu Sept 13, Fri Sept 14, and Sat Sept 15th.  Special prices will be offered all week on New Belgium products!
